Two decades of playing experience
I am a self-taught musician with over 20 years’ experience in the folk and local band scenes. Playing in various recording and performance environments including Pro Tools-based studios has given me a working knowledge of sound engineering, gig and studio setup, and hardware. I write and perform my own songs and compositions and have experience in arranging parts for a variety of instruments. Over the years I’ve developed a keen ability to learn by ear. I have played with a very wide variety of musicians and have almost boundless musical tastes and influences.
Familiarity with a wide variety of instruments
I play a wide variety of instruments, including:
- Acoustic guitar
- Electric guitar
- Twelve string guitar
- Bass – fretted and fretless
- Variety of ethnic percussion and gamelan instruments
I also understand the principles and use of MIDI for the broadening of instrumental scope, and the basic principles of mixing and production.
Collaboration with local schools
As well as visiting schools to teach pupils, I have also assisted in a number of school composition rehearsals and performances. I have attended music-orientated school trips to the Republic of Ireland in a consultative role, teaching students the rudiments of traditional instruments and music as well as busking and playing traditional sessions with them. I am regularly employed by the Music Department at Budehaven Community School, where I carry out maintenance of instruments, audio gear and Cubase digital audio workstations, as well as setup and operation of sound engineering equipment for major school performances and events. I also provide teaching assistance during lessons, advising students on instrumentation, composition and recording techniques . I am also deeply involved with the production of sheet music and arrangement of multi-instrumental scores for school performances ranging from classical music to folk, jazz and modern pop music.
I hold a current CRB disclosure in accordance with regulations for working with children and vulnerable adults.
